Visiting the wilderness has become an inexpensive and practical diversion from the demands of daily life.
In the spirit of Thoreau and Frost, more families and individuals are enjoying vacations and weekends in to the countryside. I feel that bringing all of the technology and conveniences from home tend to contradict the invigorating benefits of such an excursion. A journey into the forest or the dessert can be such a personal, collaborative, meditative, and challenging experience. You can take your dog and a good book, or make it a team building experience for family and corporate management. Excursions into the wilderness are not inherently dangerous, but can result is serious injury and hardship when the participants are lacking in experience or preparation. It is important that hikers share a destination and time schedule with friends or loved ones. Hikers should also be mindful of the weather, and the cardiovascular requirements of the trip. Adequate water and first aid kits are fundamental provisions. Explorers soon tire of the less challenging and familiar trails. Exploring new and more difficult trails are a predictable progression in the life of both amateur and professional backpackers. Check lists for transportation to and on the excursion can be very helpful. The weather can be very unpredictable, and the days prior to and after the excursion should be taken into consideration. An operative understanding of topographic maps can be very helpful. The skills associated with using and interpreting scale and contours allow you to predict the slopes and gradients along the trail. Accurate estimates of the terrain, as well as the time and distance requirements of the trip lead to an enjoyable expedition. All of these factors should be given serious attention as they relate to approaching weather and darkness. Our local, state and national parks provide a most enjoyable recreational and leisure time opportunity that is not only affordable, but can be the source of many memorable experiences that can promote a healthy lifestyle. |
